Vitiligo: global figures
Although there are no reliable data on the prevalence of the disease, it is estimated that vitiligo affects approximately 0.5-2% of the global population, with peaks of 8% in some regions of India. In Italy, it is estimated that approximately 0.7-1% of the population suffers from the disease. Converted into numbers, this means that roughly 70-100 million people in the world suffer from vitiligo, including 700,000-1 million in Italy alone.
Although vitiligo can appear at any age, the most affected bracket of the population is those aged from 10 to 30 years old, with a peak at around 20 years old. However, cases in children are increasing. From the latest studies, it appears that there are no significant differences between the number of male and female patients suffering from vitiligo.
